Infinix and TECNO Will Start To Produce Phones in Uganda

Posted on 4 May 202419 September 2024 by Paul Gwajime

Infinix and TECNO will commence manufacturing and assembling mobile phones and accessories like TVs, laptops, earbuds, and smartwatches in Uganda.

The announcement came on the launch day of the NOTE 40 series, as Uganda’s State Minister of Finance for Investment and Privatization, Hon. Anite Evelyn, disclosed that Transsion Holdings has acquired land for this purpose.

“I am glad that you have bought your own land in this country to start manufacturing and assembling your mobile phones,” the Minister said.

Transsion Holdings is a Chinese manufacturer that owns smartphone brands such as Infinix, TECNO, and itel. Though the Minister mentioned that Infinix and TECNO phones will be produced and assembled in Uganda once the plant is ready, she didn’t say anything regarding itel devices.

The acquired land is in Nakifuma, Mukono district, where the plant will be constructed. Once completed, many Ugandans will be employed in the process, and the plant will also promote the Buy Uganda—Build Uganda (BUBU) policy.

According to the Minister, Transsion Holdings will enjoy different incentives, including the zero-rated “tax on sub-duty or any other documents.” The Minister also added that the Ugandan government would help the company with the promotion of its products and as well, encourage Ugandans to buy them.

“So you will have a readily available market and not only looking at the 40+ million Ugandan market but 350+ million East African markets — and to add we have an excellent relationship with the African Free Trade Zone of 1.4 billion people,” the Minister said.

Last year, Infinix inaugurated a new factory in Egypt’s city of Obor, dedicated to producing smartphones for the local market. Similar to Uganda, the smartphones are manufactured under the “Made in Egypt” slogan.

Once finalized, Transsion Holdings will become the third company, following SIMI Technologies and MiOne, to manufacture and assemble devices in Uganda. It’s worth noting that MiOne exclusively focuses on device assembly.
